4 Types of Eye Surgeries for Clearer Vision

Vision problems are a common occurrence among many people around the world. Luckily, your Jenkintown ophthalmologist & eye surgeon uses various surgical options to correct lost vision.

These procedures help reshape the cornea to allow light to pass through to the retina or to replace the eye lens. Here is a list of the most common types of eye surgeries, how they work, their importance, and what to expect after the surgery.

LASIK

Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis is among the most common procedures that improve vision without contact glasses or lenses. A specialist uses a laser to remove tissue from the cornea surface and reshape it to make the vision clear for people with astigmatism, farsightedness, and nearsightedness.

An outpatient surgical procedure takes about 30 minutes for both eyes, which means that you will go back home after surgery. After the procedure, you will notice better vision immediately or after a day. You may feel discomfort after the procedure, but this can take only one or two days before you feel better.

Cataract surgery

Cataracts form upon the eye lens and make it cloudy. This results in blurred or dull vision, which can affect your day to day activities. This is a common condition as people age. A specialist may recommend a surgical procedure to remove your eye’s lens and replace it with an artificial one.

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure that takes less than an hour, and you can go back home when done. You will experience blurry vision with a bit of discomfort and itchy eyes, but you will feel better in a couple of days.

Glaucoma surgery

Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve located at the back of the eye, leading to vision loss and blindness. Even though glaucoma medicines treat the disease, your doctor may recommend surgery as the last treatment option.

During the surgery, the doctor inserts a tiny tube in the white part of the eye to drain out excess fluid, lowering the eye’s pressure. The fluid comes out from a tiny opening that the doctor creates on the top of the eye.

Remember, the surgery cannot cure the condition, but it can protect your vision and prevent it from worsening. This is also an outpatient procedure that allows you to go home when done. It comes with a bit of discomfort, and you may also experience blurry vision, but you can resume your daily duties the next day.

Diabetic retinopathy surgery

Diabetic retinopathy can occur in people with diabetes and whose sugar levels are not under control. The condition can damage the blood vessels in the eyes when the blood vessels leak blood or fluids to the retina, affecting your vision.

Your doctor can suggest surgery if the condition reaches an advanced stage, usually stage three. Note that you may need more retinopathy surgical procedures in the future.
